The 87th Session of the Garden Club Council of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County came to a close today with a grand celebration at the Muse at the Mill Events. Shelley Holden and Elizabeth Marley were our 2019 co-chairs and we are so thankful for their hard work, creativity, organization and style! Approximately 100 members of the GCC, representing many of our 21 garden clubs, enjoyed a delicious spring lunch catered by the Porch along with mimosas and sparkling rose sangria. Janet Snow, a charter member of Forest Garden Club, was the recipient of the GCC’s highest individual award – the Wava Howard Award for Lifetime Achievement. Club of 20 Gardens, led by president Susan Gilmore, was the 2019 winner of the Nancy D. Sherk award for its efforts in making Winston-Salem and Forsyth County a more beautiful place to live and work. During the event, Francie Bray, Chair of the 2020 Garden Tour, announced that Sandy Poehling had been named Honorary Chair. Many thanks to Michelle Hawks from Reynolda_Gardens of Wake Forest University who led a lively container gardening demonstration, and archivist Eric Elliott who presented a wonderful exhibit entitled “The Language of Flowers in Moravian Wachovia.” A zillion thanks to president Kristie Blanco who passed the gavel to incoming president Leah Crowley and led the event beautifully from start to finish. Kristie, we are so grateful for your leadership, vision, energy and constant cheerleading. Thank you!
