Philadelphia Flower Show Trip

Philadelphia Flower Show, here we come!

Kathy Acton, Lynn Jennette, Martha Abernethy and The Garden Club Council of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County invite all garden club members to join them for trip to The Philadelphia Flower Show, Longwood Gardens, Historic Philadelphia and The Brandywine Valley — featuring chocolate and wine with a Hollywood twist!

The trip dates are:  February 27 – March 2, 2015 (Friday – Monday) and includes four days and three nights, breakfasts, an elegant welcome dinner and tea at the Hotel du Pont.

ITINERARY FOR THE TRIP
Days 1 and 2

Friday, Feb 27, 2015

  • Depart Greensboro at 9:20am to arrive 10:41am at Philadelphia International Airport and meet your entertaining guide with Alternative Tours who will accompany you for the day on an unusual Philadelphia tour with a chocolate & Hollywood twist!
  • Learn fascinating tidbits about Colonial Philadelphia and why chocolate houses were such an important aspect of society. Discover the Quaker Connection and find out why Colonial children often did not drink chocolate, but beer instead! Indulge in some decadent treats along the way.
  • See sights affiliated with the many movies filmed in Philadelphia.
  • Experience chocolate and Chihully at the National Liberty Museum with its outstanding glass collections, including that of America’s most famous glass artist, Dale Chihully. Marvel at the 2 ½ story Flame of Liberty gracing the International Hall of Heroes. See other renowned artist works like Marc Chagall and Rodin as well as those that honor freedom and democracy.  You’ll also see an extraordinary collection of White House China.  We think you’ll agree that this is a museum you will never forget!
  • Enjoy a delicious chocolate treat made from Asher’s Chocolates
  • Lunch on your own at Comcast Center.
  • Enter a most unusual wine emporium with everything but the grape! We have arranged a special wine and chocolate tasting, along with a Cabernet wine chocolate sauce that will be the hit of your next party!
  • Savor a memorable dinner aboard a 100 year old sailing ship, the Moshulu. This elegant four diamond restaurant offers unparalleled views of the Delaware River, all while you enjoy first class food and an exquisite ambiance of polished mahogany, etched glass, hand painted murals and stylish South Seas accents with dazzling views of the Philadelphia waterfront and beautiful skyline.
  • Overnight accommodations at the Holiday Inn Express ideally located in the theatre district and within walking distance of an abundance of restaurants and the Philadelphia Flower Show. (3 nights)

February 28, 2015

  • After an expanded continental breakfast at your hotel, meet your guide for a journey to the Brandywine Valley – known as Chateau Country.
  • Enjoy a visit to Longwood Gardens — one of the “Great Gardens of the World”, with over 1000 acres of formal gardens displaying over 11,000 types of unique plants & more fountains than any other garden in the U.S. AND a 4.5 acre conservatory sheltering 20 indoor gardens with 5500 types of plants that will surely inspire you.
  • At 3pm, delight in an elegant tea at the Hotel du Pont. Opened in 1913, the Hotel du Pont is one of the finest examples of European craftsmanship in North America. This exquisite hotel showcases original paintings of nationally recognized artists, including three generations of Wyeths. We may even have access to some behind the scenes treasures!
  • Return to Philadelphia for a night on your own.
  • Dinner suggestions will be given if you are still hungry!

Days 3 and 4
Sunday, March 1, 2015 and Monday, March 2, 2015

  • After breakfast have both days to experience the worldrenowned 2015 Philadelphia Flower Show. Imagine a theme of “Hollywood” as you travel the yellow brick road to shimmering Emerald City, swing through the trees as the heroic Tarzan of the Apes, splash down the street while “Singin’ in the Rain,” and journey to Pandora, the lush, tropical planet of “Avatar.”
  • See your favorite cinema scenes come to life through thousands of artistic floral & horticultural displays!
  • Be sure to visit the vendors in search of your new favorite shears and other treasurers. These two days will give you flexibility to see the show and Philadelphia’s shopping and historic district sights at your own pace.
  • All meals are on your own.
  • On Monday your motor coach will leave from your hotel at 3:30 pm for the 6:05 pm flight to Greensboro.
